UV disinfection – effective, chemical-free water treatment
What is UV disinfection?
UV disinfection is a physical process for the reliable inactivation of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses and germs. It uses UV light to damage the DNA of these organisms, preventing them from multiplying.
A major advantage of this method is that it requires no chemical additives. UV disinfection is based on a natural principle modelled on the effect of sunlight and is therefore considered particularly environmentally friendly. This technology is used in the treatment of water, air and surfaces.
How does UV disinfection work?
UV disinfection utilises UV-C radiation, a high-energy part of the UV spectrum that is invisible to the human eye. UV radiation is divided into three bands: UV-A, UV-B and UV-C. Only UV-C radiation is used for disinfection, as it has the greatest energy-related effect on microorganisms.
dissol GmbH develops and manufactures low-pressure UV-C lamps that emit light at a wavelength of 254 nm. This wavelength is particularly effective at damaging the DNA of microorganisms, thereby permanently inactivating them.
Advantages of UV-C disinfection
UV disinfection offers numerous advantages over chemical methods:
- No need to add chemicals
- No change in taste, odour or pH value
- Effective inactivation even of chlorine-resistant pathogens (e.g. Cryptosporidium)
- Environmentally friendly and sustainable technology
- Fast and reliable action
Applications of UV disinfection
UV-C emitters from dissol GmbH are used worldwide as a physical disinfection solution – in water, air and surface applications. Typical areas of application include:
- municipal and industrial wastewater treatment
- Drinking water treatment
- Swimming pools and bathing water technology
- Semiconductor industry
- Pharmaceutical industry
- Food and beverage industry
- Fish farming and aquaculture
The technology is versatile and suitable for both standardised and bespoke UV disinfection solutions.
